De relatie tussen Activision en ontwikkelaar Bungie loopt al jaren moeizaam. Zowel Destiny 1 als 2 hebben heel wat miljoenen exemplaren verkocht en ook de uitbreidingen worden massaal gekocht. Activision echter is niet tevreden. Met name Destiny 2 heeft niet helemaal voldaan aan de hoge verkoopverwachtingen van Activision.
Nu laat Bungie weten dat de negen jaar durende samenwerking ten einde is gekomen. Bungie wordt onafhankelijk en zal beschikken over alle rechten van de Destiny-franchise. Destiny 2 zal blijven ondersteund worden door Blizzard’s Battle.net-applicatie op de PC. Bungie geeft verder aan dat er meer content onderweg is voor Destiny 2 en dat fans niet hoeven te vrezen voor de toekomst van de franchise.
